Meet Ludgy Michel, Our August #GirlBoss Of The Month!

It’s not easy to make it in America. It’s even more difficult to make it in America as an immigrant from the African Diaspora, having to face multiple layers of prejudice and injustice every day of your life. But is it possible? Absolutely. And our August Girl Boss is one of the individuals in our community that not only proves this, but should serve as an inspiration to anyone out there that believes that it isn’t possible!

Ludgy Michel describes herself as a 35 yr old God-loving woman, wife, daughter, and mother of two amazing humans. Born in Haiti, Ludgy migrated to the United States when she was about 7 years old. Since that time, she has become a registered nurse, specializing in hospice care, and  founded and is the sole owner of The Luxury Booth, a photo booth business that she currently runs full time. Located at 8 Trescott St. Suite 2 in Taunton, Massachusetts, The Luxury Booth has been in business since 2016. With a mission to provide clients with exceptional service and priceless memories, The Luxury Booth hopes to utilize their photo booth services to create jobs within the community, as well as be able to assist small businesses with social media engagement and brand awareness.

We got the chance to chat with Ludgy  about her start, her future, and the challenges she faces along her journey, check out our conversation below!

QC: What inspired you to stray from the traditional 9-5 work lifestyle and become a full-time business owner?

LM: I have always dreamed of being an entrepreneur. My mother came to America shortly after having me to pursue the American dream. She left me behind with my grandmother for 7 years, visiting often, while she established herself in America. She worked for many years as a CNA until she was able to get herself through cosmetology school and open up her own beauty salon, which she named after me and ran successfully for over 20 years. Watching her hard work and dedication was a big motivator for me. This led me to open up my business and has really been a driving force in making sure I succeed.

QC: Being an entrepreneur is NOT EASY. What keeps you going through those difficult times and keeps you passionate about your business?

LM: I’m passionate about being a full time entrepreneur because I have two children that deserve to have at least one parent present and available for them when they get home from school. I worked as a nurse for many years, working my way up the ranks to becoming a part of the leadership team in one of my most recent roles. I love nursing. I love hospice. I love caring for others, but I’ve realized that by working very long hours and sometimes over an hour away from home, I would have nothing left for my family by the time I got home. My husband also works long hours and that would often leave the kids at home alone for a few hours until we got home. In order to care for others, we have to learn to take care of ourselves. Don’t get me wrong, being an entrepreneur is not light work. I work more now than I ever have, but it’s a different commitment. It’s terrifying to be in school these days and see my kids are struggling with things that I didn’t have to ever consider when I was in school. They need a parent to be available to them, even if they don’t realize it. Becoming an entrepreneur has allowed me to have a certain level of flexibility in my schedule so that I can be there for my family. I can’t tell you the difference it has already made in my household in just a few short months!

QC: Tell us more about your business! What does everyone need to know about The Luxury Booth?

LM: We believe we offer a unique service. We offer more than just photos or keepsakes. What we provide to our clients is a photo experience that their guests will always remember. Our services are used for a wide range of events. We’ve done children’s celebrations, weddings, high school reunions, all the way to corporate events. We pride ourselves on customer service and making sure that our clients feel like they are the only event that matters. We offer custom, unique props and set ups. We are able to cater to all ages and have the equipment props that are appropriate for each event. We have an LED-inflatable enclosure that gives you a club/party vibe, a classic black draped photo booth for that nostalgic feel, and a stunning red carpet presentation for our open air style booths. We also have digital only photo booths that offer photos, GIFs, and boomerangs! We have a portable photo booth that brings the photo booth right out to the dance floor with you, the guest. That booth in particular has had amazing success, as it allows us to engage our clients in a different way. We also provide custom backdrops, photo books, and are now offering a grass wall set up as a backdrop.

We believe that offering such a wide variety sets us apart from other companies that may be more limited. And of course, we are fully insured and have back ups to all of our equipment, in case we ever run into an issue at an event. Overall, we are growing and always looking for ways to improve our services. We recently showcased our new slow motion photo booth at our open house event and can’t wait to bring on some more features.

QC: What do you envision for the future of The Luxury Booth?


LM: One of my goals for the business is growth. I would love to be able to have more employees and to expand my space. I would like to have a staff of 6 part-time employees to work events and to go to educational seminars with me to expand on our knowledge of the photo booth industry so that we can be able to offer more to my clients. I also hope we are able to inspire others to pursue their dreams and possibly open up their own business as well. 

My long term vision for this company is to have it become a franchise or to at least be able to travel to other destinations and have a team set up in specific states so that we can provide our services all over the country. I’ve already started establishing relationships with a nation-wide network of other people in this industry. I know this can be achieved because there are other photo booth companies that are doing this now. I study their progress and the way they market themselves and I am so inspired. I know it’s possible and I plan to get there one day.

Right now, I’m happy. I’m living my Blessed life and give all thanks to God. I was scared to death of going full time entrepreneur and leaving behind a steady paycheck. But God has seen me through each and every month. Proverbs 3:6 states: “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path”. So for anyone out there that’s been toying with the idea of pursuing their dreams, pray on it, and if God gives you the ok, JUMP!
